McIndoe Falls is in
Caledonia County and is part of Vermont's "Northeast Kingdom".
This area was settled by Scots (Caledonia was the Roman name for
Scotland) and their influence is still obvious. Most of the town of
Rygate (next town south) was once owned by the President of Princeton
University who apparently had plans of moving Princeton there.
President Witherspoon (who also signed the
Declaration of Independence) sold the southern part of Ryegate to John
Whitelaw. The 6 foot 10 inch tall Whitelaw represented a group of Scots
who planned to emigrate to America. After consulting with Witherspoon,
Whitelaw traveled to Ryegate, took a look, and then returned to New
Jersey to make the purchase. Whitelaw later became the Surveyor General
of the Republic of Vermont.
McIndoe Falls, the principal village of the
township of Barnet, the next town north (also founded by Scottish
settlers). which was originally a saw mill center and lies along a
stretch of rapids know as Fifteen Mile Falls. There were once great log
drives from the headwaters of the Connecticut, a considerable part of
which were sawed there. McIndoe Falls Dam holds back
the Connecticut River and crosses over to Monroe, NH. here and is home
to the Mcindoes
falls Academy. The first road through here was the Passumpsic
Turnpike, which ran close to the Connecticut. The Stevens River, the
outlet of Harvey's Lake, flows into the Connecticut at Barnet.
Access to Interstate 91 Exit 18 is in Barnet
(the next town north). The Passumpsic River empties into the Connecticut
just below East Barnet and has a number of islands at its mouth.
Barnet was also sometimes called "Carthage" and was referred to as
"Inwood" on old railroad maps.
